  President Muhammadu Buhari-led government on Tuesday disclosed that the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would soon come to an end. This is coming after the Federal Government promised to pay part of the arrears of salaries to the university lecturers in line with the agreement reached with the union. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, while speaking after the meeting with ASUU noted that the strike would be called off before January 15. Ngige while referring to the ultimatum issued by some students stated that the strike would soon be called off, however, he has not received any letter from the students threatening to embark on protests if the strike was not called off.   The House of Representatives has called for 10 weeks extension of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card registration with the National Identification Number (NIN) to allow Nigerians enough time to participate. Rep Ndudi Elumelu (PDP-Delta) on Tuesday in Abuja moved the motion on the need for the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to give Nigerians reasonable time to submit their NIN for SIM registration. Elumelu, who is also the minority leader of the House of Reps, said that the two weeks deadline given by the NCC for all Nigerians to register would bring untold hardship He said that though the idea of SIM registration with NIN was a noble and laudable exercise, the two weeks deadline would not augur well. The Federal Government stated this in a statement released on the official website of the National Identity Management Commission titled, “Approved Data Capturing Agents (Digital Identity Ecosystem)”.   A 16-year-old pupil of Angus Memorial Senior High School, Jemimah Marcus, who won the Lagos State Spelling Bee competition, will become a one-day governor. Marcus emerged winner on Tuesday after a fierce battle with other students. She was presented with a cash sum of N250,000 at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa secretariat, Ikeja, where the grand finale took place.   The federal government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given network operators in the country a December 30 deadline to block all SIM cards not registered with the National Identity Numbers (NIN). This is as it directed them to make their subscribers provide their National Identity Numbers (NIN) to update their records within two weeks. Naija News reports the National Identification Number (NIN) consists of 11 non-intelligible numbers randomly chosen and assigned to an individual by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) at the completion of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB). The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual in the database and is also used to establish or verify his/her identity. The NCC ordered that the NIN update for SIM cards should be carried out between December 16, 2020 and 30th December, 2020.   The management board of the Federal Polytechnic in Ede, Osun State has temporarily removed the institution’s rector for turning his office into a home. Naija News understands that the board suspended Mr John Adekolawole after a bed was found in his office. Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, the institution’s chapter, Mr Adekunle Masopa while speaking on the incident noted that the board based its strict decision on 21 grounds, which include sleeping during office hour. Masopa who spoke after an emergency congress of the union revealed that a position paper was handed ASUP by the board shortly after its meeting.  The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has reacted to the detention of Nigerian singer, Omah Lay and Tems in Ugandan police custody.  Katsina Governor has admitted that there has been a meeting with the bandits to secure the release of the children. The Presidency has said that the terrorists responsible for kidnapping 333 students of Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State have made contact with the Federal Government.  A student (name withheld) of the attacked Government Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State who escaped from the bandits’ hideouts said two of the students have been killed.   Nigerian singer, Olatosi Adekolu Oluwaseun has died after a brief illness. Oluwaseun, who was in his mid-20s, died on Thursday morning, December 10 at Obasanjo Hospital, Ojuore, Ota, Ogun State.
